Taking It to the Streets

Doriandra Smith is a problem solver. As the program manager for Whiteaker Community Council in Eugene, Oregon, she was given the task to see a COVID-19 street mural project to fruition. After eight months of developing a pilot program with the city and an arduous artist selection process, the plan was approved and assigned dates. The project then encountered multiple roadblocks, including a conflicting World Athletics Championship, paint shortages, vandalism, and protests. Smith jumped in to handle it all, and bring the project to fruition. “When this street mural project was yet an idea, vaccine numbers in the Whiteaker were the lowest of any area in Lane County, “ said Smith, noting rates have since climbed after the Council set up vaccination clinics that served almost 1,500 adults and children of this vibrant neighborhood. “After our final paint brush was cleaned, our community feels even more united in this essential public health project.”
