Making Hugs Safe Again

The Latino Alzheimer’s and Memory Disorders Alliance (LAMDA) based in Cicero, Illinois knows that a strong community includes supportive families. The successful organization educates Latino communities on how to take care of aging relatives, offering training and support programs for Latino caregivers. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in the fall of 2021, LAMDA quickly jumped in to provide free COVID-19 vaccines to those in the community who work with elderly or immuno-compromised patients or family members. Caregivers took advantage of LAMDA’s numerous COVID-19 vaccination outreach events to protect their families and their community. A caregiver named Santiago was one of many grateful LAMDA clients: “When we got the opportunity of getting the vaccine, this brought a lot of happiness to our lives because we knew that very soon, we could hug the whole family.”
