Talking points and FAQs discuss the updated COVID-19 boosters available this fall. The talking points explain that the Moderna and Pfizer boosters are designed to target the original COVID-19 strain as well as the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron subvariants. The talking points note that the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) approval process did not include human clinical trials because the boosters use the same foundation as the already authorized COVID-19 vaccines. This is similar to the approval process for annual flu vaccines. While the effectiveness of the updated boosters is not yet known, they are expected to provide better protection against COVID-19 infection and severe illness. The FAQs cover similar information.
